"This Is Just Going to Be the Beginning": Accountability For Uvalde Parents Begins With Police Chief's Firing

#quotThis #Beginningquot #Accountability #Uvalde #Parents #Begins #Police #Chief039s #Firing

Since May, residents of Uvalde, Texas—now the site of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history—have demanded accountability over law enforcement’s fumbled response to the massacre, calling for the dispatched officers to be punished and the district’s police chief to be fired. Those calls have gone largely unanswered, as news outlets have continuously worked to ascertain precisely who was at fault and why. But this week, which marked the quarterly anniversary of the shooting—during which a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at the Robb Elementary School—some of the community’s pleas were finally answered.

On Wednesday, the Uvalde school district officially fired police chief Pete Arredondo, making him the first officer to lose his job over the department’s botched response, in which officers waited more than an hour to confront and kill the gunman. The unanimous vote, as the Associated Press reported, was held during a school board meeting and was met with cheers from the audience, which included family members of the victims and survivors. According to The Guardian, when members of the crowd found out Arredondo would not be appearing at the meeting, some yelled, “Coward!” and “What about our children?” Outside the meeting, Uvalde residents called for other officers to be held accountable, with Robb Elementary school parent Shirley Zamora telling the Associated Press, “This is just going to be the beginning. It’s a long process.” Nikki Cross, whose 10-year-old nephew was killed in the shooting, told The New York Times that Arredondo’s ouster is “the first victory” for victims’ families. “They need to fire the rest of them next.”

Uvalde police failures came into sharp focus in June, with the publication of leaked surveillance footage from inside the school that offered a devastating glimpse into why officers did not act sooner, despite being equipped to do so. Most notably, the video revealed that during the incident, police were examining floor plans, discussing which jurisdiction was charge of the scene, and looking for the key to a likely-unlocked door that they didn’t try to open. Texas Department of Public Safety Col. Steve McCraw has said Arredondo was in charge of the scene, but Arredondo, who had been on leave from the district since late June, has said he did not think he was the incident commander.

While Arredondo did not appear at the school board meeting Wednesday, the disgraced chief’s attorney made his position known in a 17-page letter. The statement, released minutes before the meeting began, cast Arredondo as a “fall guy” and a “sacrificial lamb,” describing him as “a courageous officer” who, along with the other responding officials, should “be celebrated for the lives saved, instead of vilified for those they couldn’t reach in time.” According to the Associated Press, the city’s acting police chief, Lt. Mariano Pargas, is the only other officer known to have been placed on leave over the shooting.

In the aftermath of the slaughter, a lack of transparency about the police response soon became a news item in itself. A number of news outlets, in response to shifting accounts from officials, have filed dozens of records requests related to the shooting and have seen very few fulfilled. “The big picture is of a government that generally ignores or does not comply promptly with public information requests and then selectively provides information according to what narrative it wants to shape in any particular moment,” as Texas Tribune editor in chief Sewell Chan told me in July, when I wrote about the coalition of national and local outlets lawyering up in a unified front to obtain more information. At the time, New York Times deputy National editor Kim Murphy told me the absence of transparency in Uvalde was worth going to court over, even if, by the time the coalition finally got the records they were seeking, they weren’t all that newsworthy. Public records laws and public information laws “are only worth the paper they’re printed on if people pursue them,” she told me. “So we kind of need to make a point.” In August, the Times and the Tribune joined over a dozen outlets in filing a suit against the Texas DPS for “selectively” disclosing some records but failing to produce a more thorough account.

Actress Kate Walsh has revealed how she met her now fiancé, WA farmer Andrew Nixon.

The Grey’s Anatomy star confirmed that their ‘meet cute’ did in fact take place on a trip to Antarctica in early 2020, as rumoured, during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show .

“We met, as one does, on a Nat Geo expedition to Antarctica,” Walsh said, before joking to the studio audience “there’s an app for it guys”.

Clarkson in disbelief thought the actress was being sarcastic.

“No, I did. We were on a ship to the Antarctic and that’s how I met him,” Walsh clarified.

“What? This is like a movie,” Clarkson replied.

“Who knew,” Walsh added of the fateful trip.

The Emily in Paris actress told the singer-turned-talk show host that due to the climate crisis she wanted to see both the Arctic and Antarctica.

Having ticked off the North Pole, she went to explore the South Pole on a trip that changed her life.

“It was incredible. It was an incredible trip and then bonus, you know, found the love of my life,” Walsh said.

“Saw the penguins, check. Ice, check. Whales, check. Man, check,” she joked.

“It’s a pretty good trip I think,” Clarkson replied.

Following the Antarctica trip in February 2020, Walsh moved to Perth during the COVID-19 lockdowns the following month.

That move looks to become more permanent with the couple set to tie the knot.

The couple secretly got engaged last year, with the actress accidentally outing their marriage plans during an Instagram Live in October.

Talking about their new life in Perth, the Grey’s Anatomy star told Clarkson about how she’s already used to shark alarms at the beach and driving on the other side of the road.

Although she admitted when she gets tired or stressed “it’s like some old operating system clicks in” and she finds herself forgetting to drive on the correct side.

The actress and entrepreneur revealed her “new homeland” of Australia has also inspired one of the latest candles in her Boyfriend Perfume range, called Down Under.

While another is cheekily named Morning W’oud.

“It is all double entendre,” Walsh said of the range inspired by an ex-boyfriend.

Walsh and Nixon made their red carpet debut together at the Emily in Paris Season 3 premiere last December.

Nixon, who has been a farmer for more than 30 years, sometimes features on Walsh’s Instagram Stories, though Walsh largely keeps his presence in her life under wraps and doesn’t share photos of him to her permanent feed.

Walsh has been married once before, tying the knot with producer Alex Young back in September 2007.

The couple split the following year before finalising their divorce in February 2010.

Salma Hayek can always be counted on for a standout fashion moment. But she outdid even herself as she arrived for the South Beach premiere of Magic Mike’s Last Dance wearing a daring ensemble! The Eternals star, 56, arrived rocking a completely see through fishnet black dress, embellished with colorful floral appliques and paired with a skimpy pair of bikini bottoms and matching bra. The mom of one pulled her hair into a dramatic high ponytail and accessorized with a green handbag, layered necklaces, platform heels, and classic hoop earrings. Her makeup glam was perfection in neutral tones.

Salma opened up about the role back in December. “It’s very physically challenging,” she told ET of an already famous steamy lap dance scene. “My goodness. You just wait to see. It’s complicated.” She also hilariously dished on what it was like to show up to work on the set. “I play a strong woman,” she told the outlet of her character, Maxandra Mendoza. “You know what was my day going into the office? I would just sit around and watch, like, 12 men, semi-naked dancing and doing pirouettes. And I got to boss them around.”

As for her iconic sense of red-carpet style, she spoke about how it can “reinvent” in a 2015 interview. “I think the fun thing about fashion is that it’s a place where you can exercise your own creativity and you can make a reinvention of yourself every day,” she told Glamour’s UK edition at the time. And what’s the flip side of that?

“I think the bad part of fashion is when instead of being an exploration of your own identity, you try to copy everyone else then it’s not healthy,” she added. “It’s not satisfying.” She mixes things up, she said, with “color.”

“I love to add color,” she told the outlet. “I like to do a lot of basic colors like black or beige and then have an accessory that has color. Like a great scarf. I have this Alexander McQueen scarf from the Damien Hurst collection. When I wear it, even if my other clothes are really simple, it’s just something. Or even a colorful hat or a great pair of boots and a bag if it’s colorful.”

Paris Hilton and her husband Carter Reum are now parents.

Hilton, a prolific businessperson and hotel heiress, confirmed to People magazine that she and Reum, both 41, welcomed an heir of their own via surrogate.

“It’s always been my dream to be a mother and I’m so happy that Carter and I found each other,” Hilton told People. “We are so excited to start our family together and our hearts are exploding with love for our baby boy.”

Hilton previously told People that she and Reum began the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic. She said the timing was right because “I’m on a plane 250 days out of the year,” so they were able to get the eggs “stocked and ready.”

Reum reportedly has one other child, who is grade-school age, from a previous relationship.

Last year Hilton said she wants “two or three” kids of her own in the future.
