Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck accused of stealing lyrics from jailed man’s poem

Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck have been accused of stealing an incarcerated man’s poem for the lyrics of their song Sad Motherf—kin’ Parade, the fourth track on their collaborative album, 18.

Rolling Stone first reported that the song appears to have many of the same phrases as the poem Hobo Ben by Slim Wilson, the pseudonym of a self-proclaimed “cheat” and “pimp” who spent time in prison for murder and armed robbery in 1960s.

A spokesperson for Depp and Beck told Rolling Stone they are assessing the validity of the claims regarding Sad Motherf—kin’ Parade

“We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song Sad Motherf—kin’ Parade on the 18 album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album,” the statement said.

Wilson, whose real identity is not known, met folklorist Bruce Jackson at the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1964. Wilson reportedly shared a number of poems and toasts — a form of historically Black poetry that tells heroic stories in an often comedic way — with Jackson.

In Jackson’s 1974 book about toasts, called Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me, he included many works attributed to Wilson. In 1976, Jackson recorded an album based on the book, on which Wilson performs several of the toasts.

The toast Hobo Ben describes the titular character at a party where he says, “Ladies of culture and beauty so refined, is there one among you that would grant me wine?/I’m raggedy I know, but I have no stink/and God bless the lady that’ll buy me a drink.’/Heavy-hipted Hattie turned to Nadine with a laugh/and said, ‘What that funky motherf—ker really need, child, is a bath.’”

The song Sad Motherf—kin’ Parade features many of the same lines. On the track, Depp says “I’m raggedy, I know, but I have no stink,” “God bless the lady that’ll buy me a drink,” and “what that funky motherf—ker really needs, child, is a bath.”

Depp and Beck are the only songwriters credited on the track.

“The only two lines I could find in the whole piece that [Depp and Beck] contributed are ‘big time motherf—ker’ and ‘bust it down to my level,’” Jackson, who is now a professor at the University of Buffalo, told Rolling Stone.

“Everything else is from Slim’s performance in my book,” he continued. “I’ve never encountered anything like this. I’ve been publishing stuff for 50 years, and this is the first time anybody has just ripped something off and put his own name on it.”

Jackson’s son, Michael Lee Jackson (who is a lawyer), said they are looking at possibly pursuing legal action, though no such filing has been made.

“It’s just not plausible, in my opinion, that Johnny Depp or anybody else could have sat down and crafted those lyrics without almost wholly taking them from some version of my father’s recording and/or book where they appeared,” Michael told Rolling Stone.

Though Jackson owns the copyright to the recording of Hobo Ben, since Wilson told Jackson he learned the toast from his father (as most toasts are passed down orally), proving authorship may be difficult. (Jackson has never claimed to be the author of Hobo Ben and has historically shared profits with writers and performers like Wilson.)

For this reason, the accusations about Sad Motherf—kin’ Parade may prove to be more of an ethical dilemma than a legal one.

Jackson hopes Depp and Beck will change the songwriting credit to include Wilson.

“I don’t know if this record is selling. I’ve seen some reviews that I’d be very embarrassed to have gotten had they been my album,” he told Rolling Stone. “But if it is selling, Johnny Depp is making a lot of money on it. Should it go to him, or should it go to some place that helps the people who produced this culture?”

Rosie O’Donnell regrets making fun of Anne Heche for a previous TV interview the actress did many years ago.

The comedian said she “felt bad” for the jokes she cracked about Heche, who at the time spoke about her apparent relationships with aliens with renowned US journalist Barbara Walters

However, with Heche now fighting for her life in a coma after suffering severe burns after crashing her car in LA, O’Donnell said her past comments were out of line.

“I can’t stop thinking about this Anne Heche accident and how horrifying the whole thing is and feeling bad that I made fun of her when she was talking to Barbara Walters about having a relationship with space aliens,” O’Donnell said in a TikTok video

“I wonder if she’s OK. I think it’s a miracle that she didn’t kill anyone … and I hope she survives. But wow, what a tragic tale. That car was on fire for a long time, they say.”

The interview in question was the one Heche gave ABC program 20/20, during which she told Walters she created a persona named Celestia to help her cope after she was allegedly sexually molested by her father when she was younger.

“I’m not crazy. But it’s a crazy life. I was raised in a crazy family and it took 31 years to get the crazy out of me,” Heche told the journalist at the time.

“I had a fantasy world that I escaped to. I called my other personality Celestia. I believed I was from that world. I believed I was from another planet. I think I was insane.”

O’Donnell then mocked Heche during a charity benefit held at Carolines Comedy Club in New York the following year.

“What the hell kind of train wreck was that?” the comedian asked the crowd, before also poking fun of Heche’s sexuality and former relationship with Ellen DeGeneres

“She couldn’t just say, ‘I was a lesbian for two years, it didn’t work out for me?’”

Heche is currently in critical condition as she fights for her life following a car crash over the weekend, leaving her with severe burns. A representative for the star has told Page Six the actress has since fallen unconscious and slipped into a coma.

“Shortly after the accident, Anne Heche became unconscious, slipping into a coma,” her spokesperson told the outlet. “She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention.”

See Beyonce’s Heartfelt Tribute to Madonna Following Their Collaboration

#Beyonces #Heartfelt #Tribute #Madonna #Collaboration

Queens supporting queens! Beyoncé expressed her deep appreciation for Madonna after the duo released their new single “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix)” on Friday.

Madonna, 63, took to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, August 8, to share a heartfelt note the “Halo” singer, 40, sent her along with a bouquet of flowers.

“Thank you, Queen. I’m so grateful for you,” the message read. “You have opened so many doors for so many women. You are a masterpiece genius. Thank you for allowing me to sing in your song and thank you for naming the remix!!!! Love always and forever, B.”

Madonna, for her part, subsequently thanked the former Destiny’s Child member for the gesture, captioning the picture, “❤️❤️thank you!! from one 👑 to another 👑. I love the Re-Mix! @beyonce ❤️❤️,” before sharing a second snap of the flowers, which included lilies and white roses.

Beyoncé’s latest remix — which is her fifth collaboration for the song — samples Madonna’s hit pop anthem “Vogue,” while paying tribute to legendary Black female artists, including Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross.

Following the release of Renaissance in July, the Texas native took to social media to thank her fans for their unfaltering loyalty.

“Thank you for your unwavering support,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “Thank you for being patient. We are going to take out time and Enjoy the music. I will continue to give my all and do my best to bring you joy. I Love You Deep.”

While the record quickly earned both fan and critical acclaim, it has also garnered its fair share of controversy. One day prior to the album’s release, Kelis claimed that the “Formation” singer used a sample of her 2003 hit “Milkshake” without permission.

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” the New York native said via Instagram at the time. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did. Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

While Beyoncé has seemingly since removed the sample, the album, which is the “Crazy In Love” artist’s seventh studio release, once again came under fire when fans began to criticize the Dreamgirls star for using the word “spazz” in her song “Heated” — a slang term derived from the word “spastic” and considered to be derogatory toward people with spastic cerebral palsy.

The “Single Ladies” singer, however, quickly responded to the feedback, making the necessary changes. “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,” read an August 1 statement from the songwriter’s team. However, Monica Lewinsky also asked the Grammy Award winner to alter lyrics from her song “Partition,” which name drops the anti-bullying advocate, 49, referencing her affair with Bill Clinton.

“Uhmm, while we’re at it… #Partition,” Lewinsky tweeted in August, in response to the news that “Heated” would eliminate the ablest slur.

Rebel has been living it up since she announced her new relationship with Ramona via Instagram on June 9. They’ve been seen snuggling up in Paris, Italy, Iceland, and Turkey during the summer. Their activities during the whirlwind extended trip included yachting, helicopter rides, and a number of romantic dinners.

The glowing couple were photographed while attending an event on Monday, August 8, in a new pic posted for Rebel’s 11.3 million Instagram followers. “Night At The Malibu! Congrats @benstiller on your exquisite new show Severance!” Rebel captioned a pic with Ramona and Ben Stiller, cleverly nodding to his iconic Night at the Museum movies.

The Pitch Perfect actress’s public appearance with Ramona back at home reinforces their already-strong relationship. In fact, a source told us in July that the couple is only getting closer — and even considering starting a family together. “Rebel started her fertility journey on her own, that’s how much she has her heart set on becoming a mother, but she’s over the moon that she’s found a partner that wants the same thing,” a source close to the actress told HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY last month. “Rebel is such a nurturing person, she loves taking care of people, everyone says what a great mum she’ll be.”

And a source told us in separate comments that they are “inseparable.” “Rebel and Ramona have been on several vacations together, but this is their first getaway since Rebel came out, so it is quite special for her,” a pal told HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY in a July 6 report. “She knows that she has made the right decision and is overwhelmed by the love and support she has gotten from everyone. Rebel is deeply in love with Ramona, and she knows that she feels the same. Rebel does not see herself being with anyone else and she truly believes that she is her soul partner.”
