“Pro-Life” Idaho Republicans Declare Women Should Be Left to Die to Save Fetuses

A frequent refrain from gaslighting conservatives in the weeks since Roe v. Wade was overturned goes something like this: “Abortion hasn’t been outlawed, the Supreme Court is just returning the decision to the states. Don’t be so hysterical.” While technically true, in practice, this argument is, of course, total bullshit. Abortion has now been restricted in roughly half the country, eight states banned the medical procedure the day Roe was struck down, and 13 states will forbid it within 30 days of the June 24 ruling. If someone tries to claim to you that the Court’s decision wasn’t that big a deal and/or doesn’t change much, you are legally obligated to inform them they have shit where their brain should be. If you can stand to breathe the same air as them for a moment longer, you should also inform them of the many ways the various states in question have proceeded to use the opportunity afforded to them by the Supreme Court to advocate for not only forced births, but the state-sanctioned murder of pregnant people.

Over the weekend, the Idaho Republican Party voted against adopting an amendment that would have added an exception to its official policy on abortion for cases to save the life of the mother. Scott Herndon, a Republican running unopposed for a state Senate seat, argued to delegates that “for the last 49 years we have essentially lost the argument in the culture because we have focused on abortion as the termination of a pregnancy and not the termination of a living human being.” He added: “We will never win this human rights issue, the greatest of our time, if we make allowances for the intentional killing of another human being.” Obviously, he did not note that withholding life-saving care from a pregnant person, knowing they could die, is also an intentional killing, because that would apparently require too much reflection on his part. The decision not to add an an abortion exception to save the life of the mother was decided 412-164; as The Independent notes, the party platform “is used to direct policy within the state’s GOP-controlled legislature.”

Currently, Idaho’s “trigger” law, passed in 2020, outlaws abortions with exceptions for rape and incest, though only if the crimes are reported to law enforcement. (The Idaho GOP platform has no exceptions for rape or incest; a regional Planned Parenthood organization and an Idaho abortion provider have sued to block the law and a hearing is scheduled for August 3.) According to Newsweek, in a Facebook video after the Supreme Court struck down Roe, Herndon declared, “you don’t put to death the innocent child for the crime of its father, but that’s what this [trigger] law would allow.” He also claimed that such exceptions give women “a free pass,” and said that “if a mother really wants to kill her child, she could lie, say she was raped, file a police report, and go get her child killed in the state of Idaho and nobody would be prosecuted.” Because Herndon apparently wanted to make it abundantly clear that not only is he anti-abortion, he’s also a colossal asshole too. (On his website, Herndon says he “believes in preserving and protecting human life” and “has followed this in word and deed as an active Abortion Abolitionist and Pro-Gun advocate.” We’re going to guess that no, he doesn’t see the irony.)

Elsewhere in reports of horrifying repercussions from the Supreme Court merely kicking the abortion question to the states, a woman bled for more than 10 days after suffering an incomplete miscarriage because a Wisconsin hospital wouldn’t perform the procedure; a woman with an ectopic pregnancy had to seek emergency, out-of-state care because a doctor in her home state was worried he’d run afoul of the law; administrators at a Kansas hospital temporarily required “pharmacist approval” before prescribing medications that stop postpartum hemorrhages—as in hemorrhages that occur after someone has given birth—because they are also sometimes used for abortions; and a 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio was told they must give birth to their rapist’s child or seek care elsewhere.

But wait, there’s more

Ted Cruz wants same-sex marriage ruling overturned

Luckily for the Texas senator, marriage between humans and gelatinous tube worms is not on the line, otherwise he and Heidi would have to start thinking about moving abroad. Per CNN:

Obergefell, like Roe v. Wade, ignored two centuries of our nation’s history,” Cruz said in a clip posted on his YouTube channel for his podcast. “Marriage was always an issue that was left to the states. We saw states before Obergefell, some states were moving to allow gay marriage, other states were moving to allow civil partnerships. There were different standards that the states were adopting.”

He added: “The way the Constitution set up for you to advance that position is convince your fellow citizens, that if you succeeded in convincing your fellow citizens, then your state would change the laws to reflect those views. In Obergefell, the court said, ‘No, we know better than you guys do, and now every state must, must sanction and permit gay marriage…. I think that decision was clearly wrong when it was decided,” Cruz said. ‘It was the court overreaching.”

“Your Song” singer Rita Ora, 32, looked smoking hot on the red carpet at the British Fashion Awards on Dec. 5, and turned heads in a transparent red dress. The bombshell wore a gown by the designer Nensi Dojaka, and paired the look with a red bra and matching thong. In addition, Rita completed her look with facial prosthetics that gave her a futuristic look, along with open-toe red heels and a heart-shaped bra underwire.

The 32-year-old also made sure to turn around when she walked the red carpet to show off her bare backside, high-slit, and her many tattoos. Many of Rita’s fans took to Twitter to react on this stunning look. “In this weather as well!!! I respect the sacrifice for the fashion,” one admirer wrote, while another added, “I love bleached eyebrows.” However, there were still some members of her fanbase that were not sure how to feel about her siren-red look. “Honestly it’s camp in a bad way and a good way,” a third user penned, while another added, “i’m trying to like it i really am.”

Rita’s see-through gown comes just a few days after she appeared on Louis Theroux‘s podcast, Louis Theroux Interviews on Dec. 1. During this interview, the beauty told Louis whether or not she was “Becky” from Beyonce‘s famous Lemonade album. “I didn’t even think about it, I swear. And it wasn’t a J, it was an R. They flipped it ’round and then it looked like a J,” she said in reference to a 2016 initial necklace that was spotted in a 2016 snapchat. This necklace sparked rumors about who the woman was in the hit song “Sorry” by the 41-year-old.

“No, it had nothing [to do with it],” she said, via PEOPLE.  “No, that was my own design with an underwear company called Tezenis that I was working with,” Rita further explained. “This is what I mean, man. A pinch of salt. You’ve got to take things with a pinch of salt. And that’s what’s insane. I had to just sit through that until a good friend of mine, Katy Perry, gave me a hilarious badge that said ‘not Becky’.”

Of course, the gorgeous cherry-red dress was not the only jaw-dropping look Rita gave this week. She also took to Instagram and TikTok to share her silky blue backless dress from Dec. 4. “Thank you so much @britishvogue and forces for change for having me tonight on such an important night,” she captioned the carousel of photos. One of her celebrity pals included in the snapshots was Avatar star Zoë Saldaña, 44, who stunned in a black pantsuit.

Rita also created a TikTok video that included audio of Kylie Jenner, 25, from the latest episode of The Kardashians. “I’m still a mom, but these are the years I’m supposed to be naked,” the makeup maven’s voice chimed through Rita’s video of her blue dress. “With my t*****s out, a** out, f*** yeah.” The frequent Calvin Harris collaborator captioned the sexy clip, “Not a mum yet but I totally relate.”
