Matt James, ABC’s First Black Bachelor, Says Producers Missed A Chance To Address Race Issues: “Everyone Was Afraid And Sitting On Their Hands”

Matt James, who made history last year as the first Black (male) lead on one of TV’s biggest shows, The Bachelor, has had over a year to reflect on the experience and now says he sees the full scope of the opportunity lost. Given the landmark nature of his role, James says he expected the show’s producers would use the conversations around race and other matters he was having with the contestants and then-host Chris Harrison to illuminate the issues the country was facing in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd. But when he saw the show after it was edited, those discussions and even the reality of his own accomplishments were subsumed by the show’s fluffier fare.

“There was nothing to lay the framework — my background, who I was or why I’m here,” James recently told the Los Angeles Times. “The show went straight into seeing these women doing crazy things. It was very frustrating to watch.”

The Bachelor franchise had long been criticized for its lack of diversity, and with the George Floyd protests gaining steam, the show’s executive producers issued a statement in June of last year addressing the franchise’s history of poor representation. They vowed to do better.

We acknowledge our responsibility for the lack of representation of people of color on our franchise and pledge to make significant changes to address this issue moving forward. We are taking positive steps to expand diversity in our cast, in our staff, and most importantly, in the relationships that we show on television. We can and will do better to reflect the world around us and show all of its beautiful love stories.

The sentiment of that last sentence seems to have stuck with James.

“Maybe I would have told that story if the franchise had made a more concerted effort to take part in that conversation when it was at its height,” James said. “That opportunity was lost because everyone was afraid and sitting on their hands. I understand it, but that’s the kind of thing that happens when you bring people of color into your space. If they’re not willing to have that conversation, they should strongly consider not going there in the first place. There are things about being Black that people who aren’t Black can never understand. It’s too much for them to handle. But it’s my life.”

Richard Wilkins has no time for haters.

The TV personality has come to his son’s defence on Instagram, after people criticised Christian’s Logies red carpet outfit.

“So… to anyone who dares to suggest that I am in any way ‘ashamed’ of my son Christian .. for whatever reason… You are wrong!” he wrote.

“I could not be more proud!!,” Richard continued. “He is an exceptional human being who will leave his stamp on the world long after his detractors have disappeared. I love you unconditionally.”

He also has “proud dad” in his Instagram bio.

Earlier this week, Christian responded to trolls on Twitter who said that his choice to wear a dress was “not normal”.

“All I can really say is that I’m amazed at how vulnerable the patriarchy is that it can be threatened by a piece of silk,” he told 9Honey.

The majority of the responses to Wilkins’ red carpet choice were positive, many praising him for wearing something other than the standard tuxedo most men wear to the event.

And the love for Christian continued flowing in the comment section of Richard’s Instagram post.

Today host Karl Stefanovic wrote: “Beyond exceptional. He is a light. A beautiful human light. Who comes from beautiful humans. And light. Anyone who thinks otherwise ain’t worth knowing or paying attention to you. I love you guys so much.”

Reporter Leila McKinnon also weighed in: “If we are assembling an army against whoever cast doubt on the beautiful relationship between two of my favourite humans then count me in!”

“I can only dream of having such a close relationship with my daughters when they’re adults,” added Belinda Russell.

Christian and Richard have always had a close bond.

In 2020, Christian told Women’s Weekly that “people would be very surprised at how much we both look at each other for support in terms of life, love and career.”

Richard has five kids. “I’m enormously proud of each of them and supportive, protective and, hopefully, loving,” he said in the same interview. “I’m being the best father that I know how to be. And I’m certainly a much better dad now than I was when my first child was born.”

“I’ve also been struggling with the challenges I face in my career,” she wrote. “I’ve been wanting to be a country singer since I was nine years old and sometimes, I feel like I’m constantly in a battle with the rest of the industry to prove to them that I’m not just a TV personality or an influencer because that has outshined my music.”

“As a woman in 2022,” the mom of three continued, “I don’t understand why I can’t have a family, publish books, own a fashion brand, be an influencer, and do TV without being questioned if I take my music career seriously just because I’ve chosen to dream big.”

After cancelling several shows, Jessie felt that she “let so many people down.” As a result, “it sent me down a spiral again of depression and made me worried no one would want to come once the tour is back up running later this summer.”

With more shows kicking off June 29 in Nashville, Jessie is working through her pain. She’s also receiving support from friends and family including husband Eric Decker who commented, “Love you!! Your vulnerability is inspiring and beautiful.”
