Exclusive: Proposed Department of Transportation rule could standardize EV charging stations

The Department of Transportation on Thursday released a proposed rule that would standardize electric vehicle charging stations across the country as the Biden administration looks to reach its goal of using only zero-emissions vehicles in the government by 2035 and hitting net-zero by 2050. The announcement coincides with a partnership forged between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy through the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. Both agencies will work together on a nationwide rollout supporting President Biden’s electric vehicle (EV) goals. “We’re tackling range anxiety and vehicle charging deserts by making sure that charging stations are easily and equally accessible, allowing every American can get coast to coast in an electric vehicle,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement.
The proposed rule is a counterpart to another Biden administration initiative that would build out EV infrastructure in rural communities in hopes of keeping charges spaced at a “maximum distance of 50 miles apart along designated fuel corridors,” according to the notice of proposed rulemaking. Alternative fuel corridors are still being decided upon, though they will encompass most major U.S. highways. The public comment period to consider specific roads closed last month and both state and local officials were able to nominate locations in hopes of receiving funding for the project. Thursday’s rule itself focuses on providing “minimum standards and requirements for the development of each charging station.. to ensure equitable access to clean transportation options and the electric grid across all communities, increasing parity in clean energy technology access and adoption.”
