“When the committee reconvenes next week, we’re going to examine the lies that convinced those men and others to storm the Capitol to try to stop the transfer of power,” Chairman Bennie Thompson said at the end of Thursday’s initial public hearing. “We’re going to take a close look at the first part of Trump’s attack on the rule of law when he hit the fuse that ultimately resulted in the violence of Jan. 6.”
Thursday’s hearing was the first in a series scheduled to take place this month. More than 1,000 people were interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Stirewalt was fired from Fox News in January 2021. While the outlet claimed it fired Stirewalt due to restructuring, Stirewalt later called the outlet out in an op-ed, claiming he got fired for political reasons. He came under fire from Trump and many of his supporters because the Fox News political desk was the first to call Arizona for Biden in the wake of the November 2020 election.
“When I defended the call for Biden in the Arizona election, I became a target of murderous rage from consumers who were furious at not having their views confirmed,” Stirewalt wrote in an op-ed published by the Los Angeles Times.
His call allegedly stunned not only the political world but all of the Republicans who claimed a stolen election. The backlash he faced is detailed in his upcoming book Broken News: Why the Media Rage Machine Divides America and How to Fight Back, to be published in August.
In the Los Angeles Times piece Stirewalt also said: “Having been cosseted by self-validating coverage for so long, many Americans now consider any news that might suggest that they are in error or that their side has been defeated as an attack on them personally. The lie that Trump won the 2020 election wasn’t nearly as much aimed at the opposing party as it was at the news outlets that stated the obvious, incontrovertible fact.”
He added, “What tugs at my mind after seeing a mob of enthusiastic ignoramuses sack the Capitol, though, is whether that sophistication will come quickly enough when outlets have the means to cater to every unhealthy craving of their consumers.”
