The Standard report that the Gunners are ‘tracking’ the centre-back in the hope that he becomes available in the summer.

Konate has impressed with the Bundesliga side this season and he could be part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Arsenal are already preparing for the summer transfer window as the manager looks to shape his squad.

Arteta said: “We will see. We are planning what’s going to happen in the summer. It will depend on where we finish, how we finish.

“I think what we had to in December is unprecedented for a club of this stature. To do the amount of transactions that we had to make it tells you as well where we are.

“I think it was very much needed and you want to improve, you want to do that.

“It’s where you have things in the house and you believe that you can improve on it. Externally acquiring players to go to the next level. Everything is planned and let’s see.”

Central defenders could be high on Arteta’s list with David Luiz out of contract in the summer while Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis were offloaded in January.

Right-back Hector Bellerin has also been linked with a move away from the club as Arteta looks to make his stamp on the squad.

So far, things have not gone to plan this season with the Gunners 10th in the Premier League and eight points off the top four.
