The prequel is set a few hundred years prior to the events of Game of Thrones and revolves around the story of House Targaryen.
This will also include the Targaryen civil war that became known as the Dance of the Dragons. Play Will Include Previous Characters From The Original Show

There have been a ton of projects that have been put into development as prequel projects of Game of Thrones which ended in 2019. However, this will be the first project which will bring back many of the previous beloved characters from the original series of Game of Thrones.
The play is yet to be titled but it is set during a pivotal moment in Westeros history, The Great Tourney at Harrenhal. This quest had taken place 16 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The official description of the play reads that the play will take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event for the first time.
This event, according to the description was hidden in mystery. The description further read, “Featuring many of the most iconic and well-known characters from the series, the production will boast a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.”
For fans who do not know anything about the Great Tourney, here’s a gist. The Great Tourney was held over 10 days and it was considered the biggest competition event in Westeros. It included tournaments of jousting, archery, and much more.
The characters that will be roped in have not yet been confirmed. But according to George’s published books, the event saw a young Ned Stark, his sister Lyanna, teenager Jamie Lannister, the powerful Lord Robert Baratheon; Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince Oberyn Martell, and noble knight Ser Barristan Selmy.
Other characters who will likely be part of the play will be Cersei Lannister, Littlefinger, Varys, Tywin Lannister, Tyrion Lannister. Meanwhile, our favorite characters from the original series who lasted till the end like Jon Snow; Daenerys Targaryen, and Arya Stark were not even born. At the end of the event, Prince Rhaegar declared his love for Robert Baratheon’s betrothed, Lyanna Stark. This led to Robert’s rebellion and the empire of Targaryens being overthrown.
